US Open Tennis review after such a promising note for Brits

What started on such a promising note for the Brits in New York, ended on Friday in disappointment.

Dan Evans became the last brit standing in the US Open,before succumbing to Frenchman Corentin Moutet in four sets. The match that was stopped on Thursday due to bad weather saw Mourtet win 4-6,6-3,7-6,7-6.

In the opening round of the tournament Evans beat Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild comfortably in straight sets.

Promising week for Norrie

Earlier at the beginning of the week Cameron Norrie had opened his campaign with a five set win over Diego Schwartzman. Norrie, found himself two sets down against the ninth seed Argentinian. The Brit had to summon up the strength to save two match points in the five set battle.

In the second round the British Number 3 beat another Argentinian Federico Coria in straight sets 6-3,6-4,6-4. Norrie had booked a place in the third round of a major for the first time.

Next up for the Brit was Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich. Unfortunately for Norrie it was the end of his great run after suffering a four set loss. The Brit losing eleven of the last twelve games and hitting 57 unforced errors.

Welcome return back for Murray

Andy Murray’s US Open experienced lasted just two matches. Murray who was given a wildcard into the event defeated Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round.

Murray won a marathon match that lasted 4 hours and 38 minutes in five sets 4-6,4-6,7-6,7-6,6-4. The former world number 1 looked down and out after the opening two sets but the Scot fought back well. Murray even had to save a match point, but somehow found the strength and belief to win an epic match.

The 15th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime was next up for Murray, with the Canadian winning in straight sets 6-2,6-3,6-4. It was a disappointing match for Murray, with the Scot not being able to break the Canadian once.

Disappointment for Konta in second round

In the Women’s event Britain’s Johanna Konta beat her fellow compatriot Heather Watson in the first round. Konta struggled in the first set that went to a tie break, but won the second set 6-1.

In the second round Konta faced the challenge of World number 77 Sorana Cirstea. The Rumanian getting the better of the British girl in three sets 2-6,7-6,6-4.

Number One seed gets knocked out

The big surprise of the first week of the tournament saw women’s top seed Karolina Pliskova knocked out. Pliskova suffered a straight sets defeat to France’s Caroline Garcia 6-1,7-6.

In the men’s event Milos Raonic suffered a surprising defeat to Vasek Pospisil 6-7, 6-3,7-6,6-3.

Djokovic and Osaka march on

Meanwhile, the Djokovic machine continues at full pace. After beating Britian’s Dan Evans in the second round he has now made it 25 wins in a row in 2020.  He already looks the man to beat as he moves swiftly into week two.

The ladies event as always looks so open. Naomi Osaka is looking the lady to beat, but as always it is still looking so open.

The second week could still see a surprise or two as we head towards the climax of the US Open.
